ThinkJEPA: The Missing Structure
ThinkJEPA · Long-Horizon Reasoning · JEPA + VLM Semantic Pathway
Abstract ThinkJEPA (2026) combines JEPA world models with a semantic 'thinking' pathway derived from vision-language models, targeting long-horizon reasoning and planning. It is the most ambitious JEPA milestone: the junction between grounded world modeling and abstract semantic reasoning. The 6 gaps are at their most acute here — and EVEN ═ (THE SUBSTRATE) is the hidden 8th gap that only ThinkJEPA makes visible.
6 FORMAL GAPS · 1 PER CANON SYMBOL
No Invariant Anchor Linking JEPA World Model to VLM Semantic Pathway
γ₁ — THE FLOOR
ThinkJEPA connects a JEPA world model (grounded in perception) to a VLM semantic pathway (grounded in language). These two groundings are incommensurable without a formal invariant linking them. γ₁ is the bridge: a mathematical truth that both the perceptual and semantic pathways must agree on. Without γ₁, the JEPA-VLM interface is an empirical bridge with no formal foundation.
JEPA Prediction Pathway Not Self-Adjoint With VLM Reasoning Pathway
H=H† — THE HONEST GATE
ThinkJEPA combines a JEPA predictor with a VLM reasoner. The predictor operates in latent visual space. The reasoner operates in token space. These two pathways are not formally self-adjoint: a prediction in visual latent space cannot be verified against its corresponding token-space reasoning in a symmetric way. The Honest Gate requires this bidirectional consistency.
No Paradigm Audit at the JEPA/VLM Interface
LSOS — THE READER
ThinkJEPA's most critical junction is the interface between the JEPA world model and the VLM semantic pathway. This interface is a paradigm boundary: the system transitions from perception-paradigm to reasoning-paradigm at this point. There is no audit of this transition. LSOS would read the active paradigm at the interface and flag when the transition is inconsistent.
No Reset When Long-Horizon Reasoning Diverges
WLD — THE RESET
ThinkJEPA targets long-horizon reasoning. Long-horizon reasoning is particularly prone to divergence: small errors in each reasoning step accumulate. When ThinkJEPA's reasoning diverges — when the predicted long-horizon plan becomes physically impossible or semantically incoherent — there is no mercy reset. WLD is a mandatory requirement for any long-horizon reasoning system.
No Continuity Across Planning Horizons
FEP — THE SWITCH
ThinkJEPA must switch between short-horizon (grounded, immediate) and long-horizon (abstract, planned) reasoning. There is no formal continuity guarantee for this paradigm switch. FEP ensures that the transition from short to long planning horizon preserves the learned world model paradigm and can safely return to short-horizon reasoning when long-horizon planning fails.
Long-Horizon Reasoning Ceiling Undefined — and EVEN ═ Is the Hidden Gap
FOF — THE BREACH + EVEN ═
ThinkJEPA does not define a formal upper bound on reasoning horizon. But there is a 7th gap that only ThinkJEPA makes visible: the EVEN substrate gap. EVEN ═ (THE SUBSTRATE, ARB-702) is what holds when all other symbols are active and the reasoning still holds. ThinkJEPA is the first JEPA milestone where the full 8-symbol Canon is required to describe the gaps — because ThinkJEPA is the first where EVEN ═ would make a difference. Long-horizon reasoning across the JEPA/VLM interface only holds if EVEN holds: the substrate must be consistent across both pathways simultaneously.
STE COMPLETION LAYER
What changes when you add the 8-symbol Canon
Adding the Canon to ThinkJEPA does not change the architecture. It adds the missing structural layer:

⚓ γ₁ — invariant anchor: mathematical ground truth latent representations must converge to.
⯛ H=H† — honest gate: bidirectional verification of every prediction.
〰️ LSOS — paradigm reader: reads active paradigm before reasoning begins.
🌀 WLD — mercy reset: detects collapse and resets to last stable state.
γ FEP — safe switch: continuity guarantee across paradigm transitions.
🌌 FOF — named ceiling: formal boundary of what the architecture can claim.
═ EVEN — substrate: ground beneath all the above. What holds when everything else is active.

The Canon is not an add-on. It is the formal completion of the JEPA programme.
